Program Overview
The aim of the Tong Biomedical Engineering Design Awards is to encourage biomedical engineering (BME) students to design and create engineered prototypes of their ideas for the potential pursuit of new business ventures in biomedical industries. The awards accomplish this by:
- Providing funds for prototype fabrication in the BME design course
- Promoting and rewarding innovative BME undergraduate design prototypes
- Assisting promising design projects to continue development through follow-on funding and student employment to work on advancing their design
The program has two principal elements—the Tong BME Design Competition and the Tong BME Distinguished Entrepreneur Lecturer Series.
The Tong BME Design Competition
There are two competitions and respective awards:
- Design Awards. One prize will be awarded for the best prototype in each of the sophomore, junior, and senior design classes, i.e., BME 201, 301, and 402, respectively. [DETAILS]
- Research and Development Award. In a separate application process, any BME 301 or 402 (junior or senior) design project team may apply for a follow-on funding award for continued research and development. [DETAILS]
The Tong BME Distinguished Entrepreneur Lecturer Series
Sponsored by the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Mr. Peter Tong
Invited speakers will address the entire BME design class at a special mid-semester event for BME students. The lectures will be given by successful entrepreneurs and innovators in the biomedical industry and are designed to appeal to students, staff and faculty in biomedical engineering and biological and medical science. A reception follows the presentation, offering students, staff and faculty an opportunity to talk with the distinguished guest in an informal setting. [DETAILS]
