|
Financial assistance available to entering graduate students includes research assistantships, teaching assistantships, fellowships and special grants. Decisions regarding financial support are made on the basis of a variety of factors that include letters of recommendation, grades, GRE scores ect.. and, for research assistantships, matching the interests or experience of the applicant to the research programs of individual faculty members. Applications for these types of support are accepted until the February 15th application deadline.
University fellowships are awarded through the Graduate School. Students are nominated for these highly competitive awards by their respective departments. They are awarded based on demonstration of superior academic achievement, letters of recommendation, GRE scores, and an effective statement of purpose/reasons for graduate study. For consideration for a University Fellowship, please submit your online application and all application materials to the BME office by the department deadline date, December 15th. Please see http://info.gradsch.wisc.edu/education/funding/univfellowships.html for further information.
Research assistantships are available in several of the biomedical engineering areas. These appointments are under the supervision of the major professor directing the research. Students interested in research assistantships in a particular area are encouraged to contact professors whose work focuses on those topics. A research assistantship permits the most rapid progress toward a degree and normally provides exemption from out-of-state tuition. Research assistantships for biomedical engineering graduate students are comparable to stipends from other institutions. Information about stipends can be obtained from the admissions chairperson.

Teaching assistantships involve teaching rather than research experience. They vary in pay depending on the level of teaching responsibilities and usually provide a waiver of tuition. Teaching assistantships provide approximately the same pay as research assistantships. Teaching experience is especially desirable for students considering an academic career.
The UW-Madison Graduate School and the Biomedical Engineering Program offer fellowships to outstanding applicants. Because some of these fellowships have fall application deadlines, early application is necessary. GRE scores for the General Test are usually required for fellowship applications. Some students are also able to arrange support from their government, industrial employers or foundations.
