B.S. Biomedical Engineering Curriculum General College Requirements: There are different options to fulfill GCR requirements. These are the optimal courses for BME: InterEngr 160 Introduction to Engineering, 3 credits, freshman semester I. Math 221 Calculus, 5 credits, freshman semester I. EPD 155 Basic Communication, 2 credits, freshman semester I. Chem 109 General Chemistry, 5 credits, freshman semester I. Math 222 Calculus, 5 credits, prerequisite is Math 221, freshman semester II. EMA 201 Statics, 3 credits, prerequisite is Math 222, freshman semester II. Courses by semester. Freshman I: InterEngr 160 Introduction to Engineering, 3 credits. Math 221 Calculus, 5 credits. EPD 155 Basic Communication, 2 credits. Chem 109 General Chemistry, 5 credits. Freshman II: Math 222 Calculus, 5 credits, prerequisite is Math 221. EMA 201 Statics, 3 credits, prerequisite is Math 222. Chem 327 (or 329) Analytical Chemistry, 4 credits, prerequisite is Chem 109. * See footnote. Chemistry requirement. Most medical schools require a year of basic chemistry. The UW Medical School accepts Chem 109 as a full-year-equivalent course. Chem 103-104 may be selected to substitute for Chem 109-327 (or 329) and would meet the medical school requirement of a year of basic chemistry. Chem 343 (or 341) Organic Chemistry, 3 credits, prerequisite is Chem 109. Sophomore I: BME 200 BME Design, 1 credit. Math 234 Calculus, 3 credits, prerequisite is Math 222. EMA 202 or ME 240 Dynamics, 3 credits, prerequisite is EMA 201. Physics 202 General Physics, 5 credits, prerequisite is EMA 201. Zoology 101 Animal Biology, 3 credits, prerequisite is Chem 327 or 329. Zoology 102 Animal Biology Lab, 2 credits, prerequisite is Zoology 101. Sophomore II: BME 201 BME Design, 1 credit, prerequisite is BME 200. Math 319 or 320 Advanced Math Elective, 3 credits, prerequisite is Math 222. BME 310 Bioinstrumentation, 3 credits, prerequisite is ECE 230. ECE 230 Circuit Analysis, 4 credits, prerequisite is Physics 202. CS 302 or 310 Computer Programming, 3 credits. * See footnote. Chem 345 Intermediate Organic Chemistry, 3 credits, prerequisite is Chem 343 or 341. * See footnote. Junior I: BME 300 BME Design, 1 credit, prerequisite is BME 201. BME 315 Biomechanics, 3 credits, prerequisite is EMA 202 or ME 240. Physiol. 335, 5 credits. Stat 541 or 371 Introduction to Biostatistics, 3 credits Chem 344 Organic Chemistry Lab, 2 credits, or Elective, prerequisite is Chem 345. Junior I-Senior II: Liberal Studies Electives, 16 credits. Junior II to Senior II: Area Engineering Technical Electives, 12 credits; Choice of courses in one depth area: 1. Medical Instrumentation. 2. Medical Imaging. 3. Biomechanics. 4. Biomaterials/Tissue Engineering. 5. Health Care Systems and Medical Informatics. Junior II: BME 301 BME Design, 1 credit, prerequisite is BME 300. Advanced Life Science Elective, 3-5 credits, prerequisite is Zoology 101. BME 430 Biological Interactions with Materials, 3 credits, prerequisite is Chem 345. Senior I: BME 400 BME Design, 3 credits, prerequisite is BME 301. Engineering Technical Elective, 3 credits. EPD 397 Technical Communication, 3 credits. Senior II: BME 402 BME Design, 1 credit, prerequisite is BME 400. Advanced BME Technical Elective from Approved List, 3 credits. -------------------------------------------------------------- *Required: Either Chem 327 (or 329), Analytical Chemistry (4), OR Chem 344-345, Intermediate Organic Chemistry and Lab (5). For the student who chooses Chem 344-345, which cannot be taken in the Freshman year, the required computer programming course, CS 302 or 310, may be moved from the sophomore year to take the place of Chem 327 or 329. Alternatively a liberal studies elective may be taken in place of Chem 327 or 329.
