| Minor Requirements for Ph.D. Candidates |
Supplementary to the major BME field of study, each Ph.D. candidate is required to complete a minor in some other degree program(s). The minor, whether in a single department (Option A) or distributed in one or more departments or programs including BME (Option B), is designed to represent a coherent body of work, and should not simply involve an after-the-fact ratification of a number of courses. Upon completion of all minor courses, a copy of the approved Minor Agreement Form must be placed on file in the BME office. This must be done prior to requesting the Preliminary Exam Warrant.
To satisfy Option A, a student must earn at least 10 credits from a single degree program outside BME and satisfy the requirements specified by the minor department or program. Approval of the courses for the Option A minor is certified by the minor department. One course which is cross-listed with BME may be used for the minor if the course is not applied to any other Ph.D. requirement in the BME degree program.
To satisfy Option B, a student must earn at least 10 graduate credits in two or more departments or programs and can include BME courses not used for any other Ph.D. degree requirement. A planned program, approved by the student's advisor, must be submitted to the BME Associate Chair for Graduate Programs for approval.
Graduate students desiring to satisfy the requirements for a Ph.D. minor in Biomedical Engineering (BME) must select a sequence of courses approved by the BME program. Program approval is granted by the Associate Chair for the BME Graduate Program. The minor is designed to represent a coherent body of work taken as a graduate student, and should not be simply an after-the-fact ratification of a number of courses taken outside the major. To ensure coherence, the minor program must be approved both by the student's advisor and the BME Associate Chair no later than halfway through the minor course sequence. The approved minor agreement must be returned to the student's file in his/her major department prior to requesting a preliminary examination. Minor agreement forms are available from the Graduate School, 228 Bascom Hall.
The minimum requirements for a minor in BME are 10 credits of courses numbered 400 or above and passed with a grade of B or better. Independent study (e.g., BME 999) may be acceptable within the 10 credits, at the discretion of the Associate Chair of BME, up to a maximum of three credits. A course cross-listed with the student's major department may not be used for the minor.
