Bier, Li, Harrington and Nowak named Vilas Associates

Industrial and Systems Engineering Professor Vicki Bier, Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Gregory Harrington, Mechanical Engineering Associate Professor Xiaochun Li and McFarland-Bascom Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Robert Nowak have been appointed Vilas Associates. The Vilas Trustees award this honor to faculty in the physical sciences in support of their research and scholarly work and provide summer salaries and flexible research funding.

• Bier’s research includes risk analysis, including homeland security and pandemic preparedness.
• Harrington is developing improved methods of detecting Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) in drinking water systems. Human infections due to MAC appear to be increasing in developed countries.
• Li plans to develop a class of multifunctional metallic materials that can operate in harsh environments by integrating nano-photonic sensor elements into aerospace metallic materials.
• Nowak will investigate protein signaling networks in cells, or the way environmental stimuli induce gene expression changes, in hopes of better understanding human disease and cell growth, biosensor development, and biofuel manufacturing.
