| GIFT REPORT 2005: Student activities, awards and prizes | |
When a group of materials science and engineering students wanted to attend the Metals, Minerals and Materials Society 2004 annual meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina, they financed their trip, in part, with a stipend from the Dick and Pat Moll Undergraduate Student Activity Fund. At the conference, the students hosted a booth promoting the MS&E department and sold "enginearrings" — etched jewelry made from anodized aluminum — to raise additional funds for the trip. "As a student, it was a really great opportunity to go to the conference," says MS&E undergraduate Sam Zelinka. "Not only was I able to listen to many interesting presentations, but I was also able to network with engineers from across the country."
Moll, a professor emeritus of engineering professional development and materials science and engineering, and his wife, Pat, established the fund in 2002 to support student activities and activities that recognize or recruit students. "I credit my MS and PhD advisors at Lehigh University, who had the foresight to send me to national meetings and pay for everything," says Moll, about the gift's designation. He cites one Detroit conference, which featured hundreds of Fortune 100 and 500 company exhibitors. "Having the opportunity to talk with young people working there and hearing their experiences was awesome," he says. So when he and Pat decided to contribute to MS&E, they wanted to enable a number of students to have similar experiences, and, says Moll, "to be in a better position to make a more effective choice of a career and company."
