Chemical and Biological Engineering

After finishing his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, Erik Haralson (BS '98) worked as a semiconductor process engineer for two years for Motorola in Phoenix, Arizona. He then returned to school to pursue a PhD in electrical engineering at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden, and graduated in September 2004. Currently he and his wife, Joanna Drapella, whom he met in Sweden, work at Intel in Hillsboro, Oregon.

PPG Industries, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has appointed James A. Trainham (MS '77) vice president of science and technology. He joined the company from Invista, Inc., where he was chief technology officer.

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Eau Claire, Wisconsin-based Ayres Associates recently promoted Lisa Fleming Larsen (BS '81) to manager of construction services. In her new position, Fleming Larsen will focus primarily on transportation construction engineering services for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and county and municipal projects in the Eau Claire area.

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Aref Chowdhury (PhD '01) received a 2004 TR100 Young Innovator Award from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Chowdhury, who joined Bell Laboratories in 2001, specializes in nonlinear optics and biochemical detection research. Among his contributions, Technology Review recognized Chowdhury's work on nonlinear photonic crystals, which he studied as a graduate student at UW-Madison.

GigaMedia Limited, a diversified provider of broadband and entertainment services headquartered in Taipei, Taiwan, announced recently that Thomas To Hui (BS '94) has joined the company as its chief financial officer. Hui worked previously as a banking division executive director for Goldman Sachs (Asia) LLC.

The board of directors of Rockwell Automation Inc. has elected Keith Nosbusch (BS '74) to be chairman of the board after the company's annual shareholders meeting on Feb. 2. In February 2004, Nosbusch be-came CEO of Rockwell Automation, after nearly 30 years of service to the company.

Materials Science and Engineering

The Charles A. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Foundation awarded Jeremy Klitzke (BS '99), now at the University of California-Berkeley, a 2004 Lindbergh Grant for his project, "Creating Nano-sized Material for Efficient Thermoelectric Generators."

Mechanical Engineering

Andrew Rapoff (PhD '97) joined the faculty of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Union College, New York, where he teaches and researches biomechanics and mechanical engineering.

Siemens AG, Germany, has named Osman Ahmed (PhD '96) its inventor of the year. An employee of Siemens, Buffalo Grove, Illinois, since 1988, Ahmed has applied for four separate patents related to his research team's current project — creating and monitoring a controlled wireless microenvironment for lab animals.

Meriden, Connecticut-based CUNO Incorporated has appointed Andrew T. Rensink (BS '79) vice president of operations of its Worldwide Water Group. In the newly established position, Rensink will lead the group's water filtration business and develop and execute the company's global manufacturing strategies within the group. Previously, he was vice president of technology and vice president of customer support for Osmonics, Inc.

Professional Boatbuilder magazine published a story, "CNC for Hire," about David L. Jansen (BS '78). A licensed professional engineer, Jansen recently moved his company, Jansengineering, to a new facility in Topsham, Maine.
