Chemical and Biological Engineering
Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. has honored David J. Zanzig (BS '86) as a distinguished corporate inventor. He has been granted 40 U.S. patents, several of which are of commercial significance to the company. Zanzig recently relocated from Goodyear's Akron, Ohio, location to help manage new material development and compound technology in the company's technical center in Luxembourg. He is responsible for product development in Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Jeff Young (BS '95), recently took a position as the design manager for the McHenry County Highway Department in Illinois. The county is one of the fastest growing counties in the country; Young will manage all phase I and II highway projects as well as the department's permit and planning departments. He also serves as vice president of the Illinois section of ITE and lives in Lake In The Hills, Illinois, with his wife, Tina, and daughters Anna and Emily.
Consulting engineering firm Graef, Anhalt, Schloemer & Associates named Loei Badreddine (BS '86, MS '88) a principal in the firm. A structural project manager in the company's Milwaukee office, his recent, award-winning project involvements include the addition to the Milwaukee Art Museum and the Midwest Airlines Center in Milwaukee, and the Hilton-Monona Terrace in Madison. The firm also elected Brian Schneider (BS '84), an environmental engineer with technical and administrative project management experience, as an associate. He works with a variety of clients on projects ranging from soil and groundwater cleanup and industrial facility permitting and compliance issues to environmental risk analysis and building construction. He received a master's of business administration from UW-Madison in 1987.
Electrical and Computer Engineering
Darcy Grunwald (BS '03) recently joined the patent law firm of Shumaker & Sieffert in St. Paul, Minnesota, as a technology specialist. Previously an in-house intellectual property counsel at 3M, Kari Harris Baringale (BS '88) joined the firm as an intellectual property counsel.
Engineering Physics
Alan Wedal (BS '90) recently completed his master's of business administration at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and accepted a position as director of business development for ASI Consulting Group, Livonia, Michigan. Wedal, who also has a 1990 bachelor's degree in naval science and a minor in physics, lives in Canton, Michigan.
Engineering Professional Development
Powerboat Magazine presented Fred Kiekhaefer (MS '72) its 2003 Publisher's Award for Product Excellence in May. Kiekhaefer, president of Mercury Racing, Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, won the award for guiding Mercury Racing into what the magazine's publisher described as the "most important and influential company in high-performance boating today." He also was keynote speaker at the magazine's annual performance awards ceremony.
Industrial Engineering
HoneyBaked Ham, Atlanta, Georgia, has promoted Greg Hundt (BS '84) to vice president of supply chain. Hundt, who has previous experience with Quaker Oats, Nestlé, and Siemens, has been with the company since 2000.
Materials Science and Engineering
Daniel J. Piette (BS '80) recently was named chief executive officer of Sugar Land, Texas-based OpenSpirit Corporation, a software company specializing in oil and gas middleware.
Mechanical Engineering
Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, Arizona, recently appointed Duane L. Abata (BS '72, MS '74, PhD '77) dean of engineering and technology. He formerly was program director of the National Science Foundation Industry/University Research Centers in Washington, D.C.
