| GIFT REPORT 2004: Room to learn: Engineering Hall lobby to be a place for study | |
|
A big chunk of adjoining closet-sized rooms sits in the middle of Engineering Hall's spacious lobby. Formerly interview space, the area soon will be transformed into a vibrant spot where students will study together and seek assistance from tutors individually or in small groups.
The 4,500-square-foot Student Learning Center will get its start thanks to a generous gift from UW-Madison alumnus Wade Fetzer and his wife, Bev. "I know how tough it is to graduate with an engineering degree and any assistance that the new learning center can have will be a terrific plus for engineering as well as Wisconsin," he says. "We are excited to be part of Dean Peercy's vision for the new learning center and hopefully it, too, will be a good model for the rest of the campus."
Visible even to passersby on Engineering Drive, the center will include a student information area, seminar rooms, a group tutoring area, a group study area, individual study areas, informal space, and an internet café.
College of Engineering Dean Paul Peercy says the college is committed to providing tutoring so that students can master the math and science necessary for becoming good engineers. "Our vision is to provide tutoring early in the college experience in an environment that encourages students to help each other, and to create a culture in which students learn to work together," he says.
To ensure the center's long-term operation, the college is seeking additional funds.
