A university's connection to statewide industry is becoming increasingly important, and General Electric Medical Systems' Leon P. Janssen helps make such relationships possible. As the general manager of academic accounts, Janssen is responsible for GE's commercial relationships with leading university medical schools and hospitals as well as GE's Applied Science Lab and academic research teams. GE scientists collaborate with academic research scientists and physicians in the advancement of the application of MR, CT and PET imaging technologies.

Janssen, who received bachelor's degrees from the UW-Madison in mechanical engineering and agricultural engineering in 1964, joined General Electric in 1967 after serving as a U.S. Army captain. He began his professional career in GE's Aerospace Business and led GE Medical Systems Product Sales Operations and Global Educational Solutions Business before embarking on his current role. He works tirelessly to promote educational interests and develop a strong working relationship between GE and UW-Madison. Due in part to his work, more than 200 of the college's graduates are currently employed at GE.

During the last four years, Janssen has served as a member and chairman of the college's Industrial Advisory Board, where he provided advice during a time of rapid expansion and transformation. Janssen follows his brother, Gail, in receiving this award.

In addition to his work with the college, Janssen is a member of the boards of directors of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra; the social service provider, St. Aemilian Lakeside, Inc.; and Waukesha Memorial Hospital Foundation. His service to his community won him the Waukesha Chamber of Commerce Leadership Award in 1999.

Janssen and his wife, Betsy, have three married children and four grandchildren. Their daughter, Jodi, is a special education teacher and sons Jay and David are engineers. Janssen enjoys snow skiing and spending time at their lake home near Waupaca.
