The UW System Board of Regents approved faculty promotions at their August meeting. Promoted in the College of Engineering were:

Assistant professor to associate professor (with tenure):

Associate professor to professor:

Professor Erhard F. Joeres, civil & environmental engineering, has received a Wisconsin Idea Award in Natural Resource Policy from UW-Madison. The awards go to those who have contributed to natural resource policy and whose efforts exemplify the "Wisconsin Idea"--communications and cooperation between the university and the government for the benefit of the people of the state.

Professor John H. Perepezko, materials science and engineering, has received a Humboldt Research Award for Senior U.S. Scientists. He was nominated by two distinguished German scientists and will have an extended research stay in Germany.

Professor David H. Gustafson, industrial engineering, and Sarah Wackerbarth have received a grant from the National Alzheimers Association. The grant will support the design, development and pilot testing of a Comprehensive Health Enhancement Support System (CHESS) module for caregivers of people with Alzheimers disease. The project will be completed in January, 1997.

Associate Professor Søren Bisgaard-Frantzen, industrial engineering, has received the Shewell Award from the Chemical and Process Industries Division of the American Society for Quality Control. The award was given for the quality of his oral presentation and of the text of his paper given at the 1994 fall technical conference. The paper, by Bisgaard and graduate student Howard Fuller, is titled "Analysis of Factorial Experiments with Defects or Defectives as the Response," and appeared in Quality Engineering.

Professor Stephen M. Robinson, industrial engineering, has received an honorary Doctor of Economic Sciences degree from the University of Zurich. The honor acknowledges his fundamental contributions to the theory of nonlinear optimization, particularly for efficient and robust solutions methods, and his extraordinary efforts towards global information exchange among academics and professionals in the operations research area.

Professor Stanley H. Langer, chemical engineering, has received a Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Oviedo, Spain. He was recognized for his work in applied chemistry and chemical engineering, particularly in the areas of processing, chromatography, chromatography reactors and electrochemistry. The degree was conferred in a ceremony during which he was presented with a gold ring, white gloves and other symbolic articles. He also gave an invited talk as part of the investiture.

Associate Professors Jeffrey S. Russell and Teresa M. Adams, civil and environmental engineering, and Assistant Professor Dharmaraj ("Raj") Veeramani, industrial engineering, have been awarded a 5-year NSF Graduate Research Traineeships grant of $562,500 for recruitment, mentoring and training of women students from diverse academic disciplines to pursue graduate education, research and careers related to the area of construction automation and robotics.

Procter & Gamble Professor in Total Quality Donald S. Ermer, industrial and mechanical engineering, made a presentation with student members of ASQC at its 50th Annual Quality Congress in May. The interactive presentation was titled "Teamwork Through Tinkertoys" and alternated two groups of 24 participants between the Unseen Assembly Exercise and the Successful Egg Drop Exercise.
