Chemical and Biological Engineering
William J. Schmitt (MS '82) William Schmitt's team of
researchers at Pharmacia & Upjohn, Inc. of Kalamazoo, Michigan is
using super-critical gases as antisolvents to produce finely divided
powders of organic compounds that are important to the pharmaceutical
industry. Schmitt studied the properties of supercritical fluids with
UW-Madison Chemical Engineering Professors Richard Grieger-Block and
Thomas W. Chapman. He also earned a PhD from MIT in 1985.
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Russell Christesen (BS '46) has received the Wisconsin Alumni
Association's Distinguished Alumnus Award for 1996. Christesen is
chairman of the board of EBASCO Services, Inc. and also serves as
chair of the college's Vision 2000 campaign. He is a founding member
of the visiting committee for the Department of Civil and
Environmental Engineering to help provide a perspective on industry
needs. He was also influential in the development of the department's
Construction Engineering and Management Program.
Julian Barrientos (MS '61) presented the keynote address,
"Basic Elements for Success in Engineering," at the April 20, 1996
Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers Region VI Student
Leadership Retreat Banquet. The event was held at Marquette
University. Barrientos is CEO of Barrientos Engineers & Architects, a
full-service consulting engineering and architecture firm with offices
in Madison, Milwaukee, Boston and Iowa City. He has been a featured
motivational speaker at SHPE events in Los Angeles, Chicago and
Madison.
William C. Gruetzmacher, PE (BS '83) has been named an
associate at Graef, Anhalt, Schloemer & Associates, Inc., a Milwaukee
engineering firm. He joined the firm in 1986 and is a project engineer
in public works services. His responsibilities include designs for
site plans, grading plans, water distribution systems, and storm and
sanitary collections systems.
James K. Crossfield (PhD '84) began a one-year term as
president of the American Association of Geodetic Surveyors on April
24, 1996. He also won the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping's
Earle K. Fennell Award for excellence in surveying and mapping
education at ACSM's annual meeting. Crossfield coordinates the
Surveying Engineering Program at California State University, Fresno.
Electrical and Computer Engineering
Charles Dettlaff (BS '85) was named Vice President of Product
Development for Advanced Rubber Concepts. Dettlaff is responsible for
the development of technologies and products with introductions
planned for heat seal connectors, membrane keypads and a new label
system. Dettlaff is also responsible for ARC's entry into the user
interface and keypad module assembly business. ARC has offices in
Oklahoma and Illinois as well as in Taiwan, China and Scotland.
Richard J. Schwartz (BS '57) was appointed Dean of the Schools
of Engineering at Purdue University, effective July 1995. His previous
position was head of Purdue's School of Electrical and Computer
Engineering.
Engineering Mechanics
Andres J. Aparicio (BS '89) is a spacecraft engineer for AT&T
Satellite Operations in Hawley, Pennsylvania. Aparicio also holds a
MSAE degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona
Beach, Florida.
Junghwa Hong (MS '92) has received a doctorate degree in
Biomedical Engineering from Marquette University.
Brewster H. Shaw ( BS '68, MS '69) spoke at UW-Madison's spring
graduation ceremonies. A former NASA astronaut, Shaw is a director at
Rockwell International.
Industrial and Systems Engineering
Greg Juedes (BS '78, MS '81) is Director, Information Services, at
Women & Infants Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. He was
previously an independent healthcare information systems consultant
and a director with Sneider Consulting, Inc. in Newton, Massachusetts.
Juedes lives in Franklin, Massachusetts with his spouse Mary and dog
Madison.
James Voss (BS '93) was promoted to Manager of Gas Buying and
Selling at Wisconsin Gas, a division of WICOR. On May 12, 1996 he
received an MS in Management - Finance from UW-Milwaukee, where he was
a member of the honor society for Business Administration, Beta Gamma
Sigma.
Mechanical Engineering
Jennifer L. Pavlovic (BS '84) received her PhD in Biomedical
Engineering from the University of Minnesota in April 1996. She
received an MS in mechanical engineering from the University of
Minnesota in 1987, and is a licensed professional engineer.
Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics
Steve Bohlman (BS '75) has been named to the merger transition
team for the merger of Wisconsin Power & Light, Interstate Power and
IES Utilities. He is Senior Business Developer in Madison. He will be
on the Market and Customer Interface Team, which will address sales
and marketing, products and services and customer issues related to
the merger and future direction of the new utility, Interstate Energy
Corporation.
