Dong Soo Hur's managerial philosophy is to strive for excellence in everything. He's stayed true to this principle throughout his career.

As the CEO of Honam Oil Group since January 1994, Hur is in charge of the Honam Oil Refinery, two oil sales companies, an LPG importing and sales company, and a crude and coastal tanker company. Total sales of these ventures reached $10 billion in 1994, making Honam Oil, which employs 4,500 people, one of the most productive companies in Korea. In fact, in 1993 Fortune magazine ranked Honam fifth highest in the world in per capita turnover.

Honam Oil Refinery, the parent company, was established in 1967 as a joint venture between Caltex of the U.S. and the LG Group of Korea.

Hur was born in the Korean province of Jinyang. In 1966, he earned his BS in chemical engineering from Yonsei University. He spent the next five years at UW-Madison, earning his MS and PhD in chemical engineering.

Hur began his professional career as a research engineer for Chevron Research Company in Richmond, Calif. In 1973 he returned to Korea and began working for Honam, holding a series of positions with increasing responsibilities. Among them were directorships of production, planning, marketing, supply and distribution, and research and development.

Hur has been a driving force behind Honam Oil's success. He initiated the distribution of its crude oil sources to worldwide outlets, including spot markets. As a result, many consider him to be Korea's best professional manager specializing in energy and petrochemicals. Hur has also played a key role in promoting the management innovation known as the "Pacesetter 2000 Project," which combines new management technology with a vision of the 21st Century.

In addition to his corporate activities, Hur has played a leading role in Korean industry, having held such posts as chairman of the Korean Petroleum Association and chairman of the Korean Futures Trading Association.

An avid sportsman, Hur particularly enjoys golf. He and his wife, Ja Kyoung Kim, have a daughter and two sons.
